Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, just north of Orick, offers a wide variety of activities including hiking, camping and wildlife viewing.  One of the most popular parts of the park is Fern Canyon, a place where parts of Jurassic Park 2; The Lost World were filmed.
Explore the fern covered canyon that reaches up to 80 feet high in some spots and see why this is one of the most magical places in Humboldt County.

How to get there:
From Hwy 101 (2 miles north of Orick), take Davison Road west.  Shortly after taking the Davison Road exit, the road will turn into a narrow dirt road which will go 8 miles until you reach the park entrance. Vehicles wider than 8', longer than 24' and trailers are prohibited. After entering the park, follow the road for 3 miles until you reach the parking lot where the road ends.  Fern Canyon is about a 1/10th mile walk from the parking lot.
More Info:
There is an $8 day use fee which will allow you to visit Fern Canyon, Gold Bluffs Beach and the other areas of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.  It is worth every penny. California State Park and National Park Service passes are accepted.
You will most likely see some Roosevelt Elk in the park.  Do not feed or approach them.
For more information about Fern Canyon, please visit its Website.
Other things to do in the area:
Lady Bird Johnson Grove to the south (on Highway 101) has some beautiful family-friendly walking trails.  About 20 miles north and just into Del Norte County is Trees of Mystery; a popular tourist spot with a pretty big gift shop and a really cool Museum
