Red Bluff - (3.6 Miles; Loop) - Iron Canyon Trail

Highway 36
Red Bluff , California 96080
Tehama County

This is an easy loop trail that takes you through quite a bit of lava rock on your way to a bluff above a turn in the Sacramento River.  It's an easy hike in that it's level but you need to pay attention to the abundance of rocks you'll find on or just to the side of the trail.  A dusk hike is pretty sweet because you look over the valley as the sun is setting.
Although this trail is right of Highway 36, there is a lot of peace and serenity to be found.  While the trail is used pretty frequently, we have rarely seen other people while hiking here.
Distance:  3.6 miles (loop)
Degree of Difficulty: Easy

More info:
Bring sunblock and plenty of water; it can get hot on this trail and there is little shade.  When you reach the bluff overlooking the Sacramento River, about the half way point,  there are a few places that are great for having a picnic and relaxing.

How to get there:
From Antelope Blvd in Red Bluff, take Highway 36 toward Lassen. The trailhead is just a few miles down the road on the left.  You will see a sign marking the parking lot which is right off the road.  If you see the Hog Lake Trailhead, which is just a bit further, you've gone too far.
Other fun things to do in the area:
Keep heading east on Highway 36 and you'll reach Lassen Volcanic National Park.  In Red Bluff, the Red Bluff Recreation Area is a great city park with a lot to offer and the nearby Sacramento River Bend Area is a popular local favorite that offers miles of trails, fishing and plenty of places to relax.
