Jug Handle State Natural Reserve is a special place.  Few places on earth display a more complete record of ecological succession and each of the five terraces at the reserve represents one stage of this progression.
On top of the geology, the place is simply gorgeous and offers incredible views.  There are peaceful trails that will lead you through meadows and to the edge of bluffs, putting you right above the ocean.
This 1,000+ acre park is bisected by Highway 1 and also features a nature center and farm.  Head to the east side of the park to visit Jackson Demonstration Forest where the highest steps of the ecological staircase lie.

How to get there:
The reserve is located along Highway 1; just a few miles south of Fort Bragg and immediately north of Caspar.
More info:
Dogs are allowed on leash only on the west side of Highway 1.  For more info about the different trails at the park and for other park features, visit the Park's Website
Other things to do in the area:
Van Damme State Park is just to the south as is the fabulous Russian Gulch State Park.  North, in Fort Bragg, visit Glass Beach and MacKerricher State Park for a great time along the ocean.
