The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is one of the best gardens in the United States (US Today has it ranked 5th) and is a must-visit when in the Fort Bragg area.  It features a wide variety of flowers and plants and is a popular destination for bird watchers who can look for the 150+ species of birds that live in or visit the gardens throughout the year. 
The gardens are known for its tender species Rhododendrons that produce fragrant blossoms and the Perennial Garden is a delight with bulbs, flowers and grasses blooming from spring to fall.  
The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens also hosts entertainment and special events throughout the year as well as workshops, classes and other demonstrations. 
Stop by and visit the gardens on your road trip for an experience you won't forget.  It has both permanent and rotating exhibits so each trip to the gardens in a unique one. 
   
How to get there:
The Gardens are located right off of Highway 1, south of the Highway 20 exit and right after Johnson Lane.

Other things to do in the area: 
The area is flush with Art Galleries and Museums.  A ride on the Skunk Train is a fun experience and no trip to the Fort Bragg area would be complete without a visit to Glass Beach
