John Sutter built Sutter's Fort, then called New Helvetia (New Switzerland), almost 200 years ago making it the first non-Indigenous community in the Central Valley.  The adobe structure was abandoned during the gold rush but has since been restored to its original condition and is now a National Historic Landmark that you can tour.
How to get there:
The Fort is located in Midtown Sacramento.  Take a look at the map to find your best route to get there.
More info:
There is metered parking around the Fort so bring some change.  The Fort is open daily from 10am-5pm.  Check out its Website for more information.
Other things to do in the area:
The California State Railroad Museum and the California Automobile Museum are both nearby and are really cool places to visit as is The California Museum.  Spend some time outside at McKinley Park and be sure to stop by the McKinley Rose Garden while you're there.
