Featuring the history of Mt. Shasta and the surrounding area, regional geology, artifacts and history of the Native Americans who originally inhabited the area, the Mt. Shasta Sisson Museum is a must-see when in the area.
The museum also features a hundred year-old fire truck, a really cool model train exhibit, a store and more.
Stop by often as they host rotating exhibits, special events and programs for kids as well.
The Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery is also located on the grounds so save some time to check that out when you visit.

How to get there:
From I-5 in either direction, take the West Lake Blvd exit and head west until you reach the stop sign at N. Old Stage Road (a very short distance).  The entrance to the museum will be right in front of you.
More info:
Entry is only $1 per person.  For hours and other information, visit the Museum's Website
Other things to do in the area:
There are also some great Art Galleries in the area that are worthy of a visit.  Lake Siskiyou and Castle Lake are nearby.  Just east of Mt Shasta is the town of McCloud where you can find the beautiful McCloud Falls.  Take a quick trip south to Castle Crags State Park and if you're looking for a pretty incredible hike, Black Butte is for you.
