9 Cool Stops Along Avenue of the Giants

Avenue-Feature-Cover-Phoo

The world-famous Avenue of the Giants attracts people from all around the world due to its towering trees, lush ferns and chill vibe.  There are quite a few fun places to stop along the way but here are 9 we think you will especially enjoy.

1  The Eternal Tree House

Created by a fire and modified since, step inside the stump of a mighty redwood tree.  This unique stop gives visitors a perspective that many never get the opportunity to see.  It takes just a few minutes to see but will leave a lasting impression.

 2.  Founder's Grove

Home to the Dyerville Giant; a massive redwood tree that once stood an estimated 370 feet tall, Founder's Grove might be the most popular of the groves within Avenue of the Giants.  Enjoy the best of what the grove has to offer by taking the wheelchair accessible loops.

Dining in the Avenue -->  If you're looking for some good food while adventuring in the Avenue, be sure to check out our Humboldt County Restaurant section for some fantastic options.

3.  The Living Chimney Tree

Just north of the most southern entrance to Avenue of the Giants, the Living Chimney Tree is an interesting stop that offers great photo opportunities.  It's one of the first points of interest along the Avenue as you head north and sets the tone for a fun day.

4.  Dyerville Bar & Overlook

Dyerville Bar allows access to the Eel River while the overlook itself has picnic tables, plenty of parking and open grass areas. With some beautiful views of the river and the surrounding mountains, it's a great place to relax and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air.

5.  The Immortal Tree

The Immortal Tree near Redcrest may not be the oldest, tallest or the biggest tree in Northern California but it just might be the toughest. The tree has survived a flood, fires and the cut of a saw yet still stands tall along the roadside of Avenue of the Giants. Stop by and be inspired.

6.  Drury-Chaney Trail

This 2.4 mile walk through lush redwoods is the perfect distance if you're looking to get out and catch some fresh air and exercise. See if you can spot the Dreadlock Man as you walk through some incredible trees and some of the lushest ferns and other plants you'll find in the area.

7.  Leatherwood Bar

It can get warm in Southern Humboldt and when you're exploring the Avenue of the Giants, Leatherwood Bar offers the perfect spot to cool off in the South Fork of the Eel River.  It's also a great place for a picnic, tossing a frisbee or working on your tan.

You Might Also Like -->  Located very near Avenue of the Giants and within Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Big Trees Area and Rockefeller Forest are two other places worth visiting while on your Avenue adventure.

8.  California Federation of Women's Club

Just a little over a mile north of Weott, you'll find the gem that is the California Federation of Women's Club Grove.  This day-use only park has all the things visitors need when it's time to relax and refuel.  Picnic tables, grills, restrooms, access to walking trails and places to swim are the core amenities that make this an Avenue favorite.

 9.  Franklin K Lane Grove

Franklin K. Grove is a peaceful half-mile loop trail offers fresh, redwood air and the chance to stretch your legs before venturing on.  If you're heading south, it's the last stop on your Avenue adventure and one worth making.
