This converted railroad track from Susanville to Westwood is now one of the best mountain biking, hiking and equestrain trails in the county.
From Susanville to Mason Station, it's an incline of about a 3% grade through a variety of environments and trail conditions so many people choose to start in Westwood and ride toward Susanville which is more flat/downhill.
Running a total of 25.4 miles (one-way), from Westwood, you ride approximately 4.5 miles to the trailhead in Mason Station. The next 4.5 miles run through open forests and the remaining 16 miles along the Susan River where riders will cross twelve bridges and trestles along the way as well as go through two tunnels.
The trail runs through the Goumaz Campground (roughly the half-way point) so you can make the ride a two day trip if you'd like.  Since fishing is permitted in the Susan River, you can fish while you camp or along the way.
The views on this trail are incredible and there is plenty of wildlife to be seen.  Spring or Fall are the best times (in our opinion) to take this trail but it's pretty awesome in the summer too.

How to get there:
The main trailhead is located at the Historic Susanville Depot Musuem.  There is also a trailhead off of Mooney Road in Mason Station, just north of Westwood.

More info:
There is a bus that will take you from Susanville to Westwood so you can park in Susanville and ride back to your car.  In the winter, you can cross-country ski along almost 20 miles of the trail.  Contact the Depot Museum for more information.
Other fun things to do in the area:
After your ride, you may want to relax or play in the water at Eagle Lake, Lake Almanor or the Butt Valley Reservoir
